Sunday's SIU-NU game moved to 12 noon
Carbondale, Il. – Saluki senior J.T. Weber moved into a 7th place tie on SIU's career home runs list when he led the Salukis (17-6) past Butler (9-13) Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium, 16-4. Weber, who hit two home runs and drove in five runs, tied Chuck Curry (1976-79) for seventh place on SIU's career home runs list with 27. The school home run record is 36 set by Robert Jones (1983-86).
Weber's three run home run highlighted a six run Saluki fifth inning in which Southern had six hits and sent 11 men to the plate versus three Butler pitchers. The inning began with Grey Epps' fourth home run of the season, and it included an RBI single by Nick Hagedorn and a bases loaded walk to Evan Martin.
That walk was one of 12 SIU hitters received from six Butler pitchers. The Bulldogs also hit one Saluki batter and threw two wild pitches.
Hitting behind Weber in the Saluki lineup, SS Kaeber Rog drove in four runs. His bases loaded double in the third inning gave SIU an 8-2 lead, accounted for three of his four RBIs and accounted for all of SIU's runs in that inning.
The Salukis grabbed command of the game in the second inning scoring five times on six hits. Hagedorn began the inning with his first triple of the season. Epps then walked and Martin singled in Hagedorn with the inning's first run. Ryan Rodriguez singled in Epps and then Cody Cleveland walked. Weber singled in Martin with the third run of the inning. Rog hit into a double play that scored a run before Darren Taylor capped the inning with an RBI single.
SIU added solo runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Weber's second HR of the game accounted for the sixth inning run. Hagedorn drove in JD Ortiz with the eighth inning run.
Winning pitcher Noah Farmer (3-0) turned in his team-high fourth six inning start of the season. He limited the Bulldogs to single runs in the second and third innings. He allowed a solo home run to Aaron Steinhart in the third inning. One game after walking a season-high five versus Illinois, Farmer did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Butler scored its final two runs in the final two innings off Saluki relievers Payton Tinkler and Kaden Peterson.
SIU pitches Ben Chapman (0-1) versus Northwestern in the noon (CT) weekend finale. Northwestern (8-10) beat SIU Friday 10-4 before clubbing Butler 13-3 Saturday.
