
Salukis return home to host Cougars for first of two midweeks

Southern hosts its sister school SIUE Tuesday before traveling to Arkansas State on Wednesday.
The Southern Illinois University baseball team returns home to Itchy Jones Stadium to host its sister school, SIUE for a midweek showdown on Tuesday, March 8. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
The Salukis, winners of nine of their last 10, return to Carbondale after taking two of three from future OVC member Little Rock. SIU's nine wins are the most in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Cougars come into Carbondale having won five-straight and are fresh off a four-game sweep of Western Michigan.Â
Tuesday's game against SIUE is the first of five games this week for the Salukis. Southern travels to Arkansas State on Wednesday before hosting Western Michigan for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 11.

- SIU is bidding for its 6th win in a row over the Cougars over its 10th in 11 tries.
- SIU just won two of three at Little Rock (6-3). The Trojans popped the Salukis, 10-0, in game one. SIU won the final two games of the series when it swept Saturday's doubleheader 9-6 and 5-2. Saluki relievers Trey McDaniel and Matthew Steidl each earned a save. The two totaled six IP and two R allowed in two games.
- SIU CF/1B JT Weber tied a career-high with four hits in Saturday's game one win.
- Southern hit three home runs in the three games in Little Rock.
- SIU is tied for 18th in Division One with 18 home runs in 11 games this season. That's good for 3rd in the MVC (1. DBU-21, 2. MSU, 20). SIU hit 84 home runs in 2021. That is the school record, and it was more than SIU hit the previous three seasons combined.

Also has a hit in each of his first 11 games as a Saluki. Boucher is third in BA (.412), tied for seventh in hits, tied for first in R, and tied for eighth in RBI.
- CF/1B JT Weber is SIU's top hitter among its returning players. He is eighth in the MVC in BA (.370), is tied for first in R, and is tied for eighth in RBI.

- Four Saluki pitchers combined to no-hit Austin Peay in a 10-0 SIU win on 2/22. SP Ben Riffe (6 IP) combined with relievers Tanner Lewis, Jordan Gould and Kaden Peterson-one inning apiece-to hold the Governors hitless. The Govs stranded 9 baserunners and SIU committed three errors.
- For his efforts in that game, Rife, won the MVC's first Pitcher of the Week Award for the 2022 season (2/28/22). Rife is scheduled to start Tuesday's game vs. SIUE.
