CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Featuring the third shutout of the season, the duo of right-hander Mike Hansell and right-hander Matthew Steidl performed phenomenally on the mound for SIU, picking up a 2-0 win over MVC opponent Bradley Friday evening at Itchy Jones Stadium.
"Even with two runs on the board, that's probably the best game we've played from the starting pitching, to relief pitching, to defense and finding a way to score enough runs." said head coach Lance Rhodes. "In a game like that, emotions are high. It's nice to play a game like that, especially in conference."
In front of a crowd of 500, starter Mike Hansell got the win for Southern with his slider strikeouts, while collecting eight strikeouts on five hits and pitching a season-high six and a third innings.
To kick off the offense, first baseman Ryan Rodriguez grabbed his third homerun of the season, a deep shot into right-center field on the 1-1 count to bring the score 1-0 in favor of SIU (19-7).Â
On the mound for Bradley (7-13), freshman Jacob Kisting is now 4-2, after walking two in the bottom of the sixth inning. With center-fielder J.T. Weber on bag, shortstop Kaeber Rog picked up hit #46 on the season with a single down the right field line to send Weber to third. Left-fielder Pier-Olivier Boucher was then hit by pitch to load the bases, as right-fielder Nathan Bandy got four balls to the plate for Weber to walk home easily.
Reliever Matthew Steidl took over the job on the bump in the sixth inning, picking up his second save of the year and collecting four strikeouts at the plate.Â
Only outputting three hits on the night, Rodriguez with his solo homer, Rog and Bandy also picked up singles in the evening.
"Until Tuesday and tonight, we haven't scratched the surface for what we can be on the mound and we know it's there. That was the excitement that we can still be 18-7, we'll start throwing the ball like we know we can and keep a run going."
SIU is back in the box for game two against Bradley, tomorrow afternoon at 2pm inside Itchy Jones Stadium.
