Taking the mound in Maroon was senior right-hander Noah Farmer trying for his fourth win of the season. The Metropolis native threw 90 pitches, only walking one while collecting five strikeouts on the bump.Â
To start off the scoring for SIU (20-7), a single off the bat of third baseman Cody Cleveland drove him to the bag. A later hit by pitch on center-fielder J.T. Weber and a wild pitch, Cleveland was spot on third base. Shortstop Kaeber Rog popped up into center-field, sacrificing to drive Cleveland home and take the initial lead in the bottom of the third.
Next inning, Bradley (7-14) notched a run on the board: an RBI single down the right field line off the bat of third baseman Jack Lincoln to bring a 1-1 tie ballgame.Â
Center-fielder J.T. Weber now ties for fourth in career home runs with his solo shot deep into left field on the 2-0 count to rally up the Dawgs in the lead by the bottom of five.
With reliever Jordan Gould now on the mound in the sixth, the Braves fought back with another RBI-single from Lincoln to even the score, only to be avenged with the largest lead in the ballgame in the bottom inning. Racking in his fourth multi-hit game of his Saluki career, first baseman Ryan Rodriguez found the left side corner just near the foul line to make do for a double and score left fielder Nathan Bandy. With one out and bases loaded, Cleveland grounded out on the right side to first base, scoring Rodriguez and taking a two-run lead.
Bradley answered back with a solo home run into right field off the bat of center-fielder Ryan Vogel and close the margin 4-3 in the top of the seventh.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Bradley took the edge with scoring off of a passed ball to even the game, 4-4 in the ninth. Right-fielder Carson Husmann then shot a sacrifice-fly into center field to score Connor O'Brien and take the 5-4 for the first time all game.
Entering a bottom nine, a walk and a fielding error in center field left for two Salukis on first and third base with one out. A sacrifice-fly off the bat of left-fielder Nathan Bandy gave way for the tying run, 5-5, and two outs. Rodriguez already three-for-five in the afternoon, a bad hop by the Braves shortstop landed the walk-off run for pinch runner Darren Taylor to head home and take the opening conference series.
Taking the W on the mound was closer Trey McDaniel, picking up four strikeouts on zero earned runs with only one walk in 35 pitches.
Saluki shortstop Kaeber Rog went two-for-three on the afternoon, following was third baseman Cody Cleveland and right-fielder Evan Martin with singles.
The series concludes tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch being thrown at 1pm at Itchy Jones Stadium.
