Bradley led 3-2 in the seventh inning when it scored four times on three hits against Saluki relievers Matthew Steidl and Tanner Lewis. Two hit batsmen and bunt single loaded the bases versus Steidl. Then Bradley slugger Connor O'Brien hit a slow chopper to Saluki 3B Cody Cleveland who booted the ball for an error as he looked to make a play at home. The Braves' Peter Hansen followed with a two-run single. Two hitters later Bradley DH Connor Manthey chased Steidl with an RBI double. Lewis relieved and got the final two outs without allowing any runs and BU led, 7-2.
SIU closed within 7-5 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Evan Martin walked and BU reliever Eli Campbell hit Saluki 2B Grey Epps with a pitch. Ryan Rodriguez followed with an RBI single. After J.T. Weber walked, Kaeber Rog singled in Epps and Cleveland to bring the Salukis within two runs, 7-5.
Bradley rallied with two in the 8th inning. Lewis hit Bradley RF Michael Mylott with a pitch leading off the inning. After Adam Brian sacrificed pinch runner Cole Luckey to 2B, Ryan Vogel delivered Luckey with a single. Later, Peter Hansen's bunt fielder's choice produced the second run of the inning and a 9-5 BU lead.
SIU threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning against Campbell. Walks to Martin and Rodriguez after Cleveland opened the inning with a single loaded the bases for Weber with two outs. Representing the tying run, Weber grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.Â
Weber and Rog slugged back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning to make it 3-2 Bradley. Weber's homer was his 13th of the season. Weber, who has 28 home runs in his last 68 games, moved into a third place tie with Chris Serritella on SIU's career home runs list with 30. Rog's homer was his seventh of the season.
Bradley grabbed a 3-0 lead thanks to solo home runs by Connor Manthey (2nd inning) and Carson Husmann (4th inning) off Saluki starter and loser Ben Chapman (0-2) and Jackson Chatterton's RBI double off of Steidl in the 6th inning.
Chapman turned in his second longest pitching stint of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
Bradley starter and winner Matt Hamilton (1-1), who'd totaled just three innings pitched in three starts this season shutout SIU on three hits and walked none over the first five innings.
Both teams stranded 10 base runners in Sunday's game.Â
The loss meant SIU closed an 11 game home stand with an 8-3 record.
The Salukis play their next five games on the road beginning with a 6pm. game Tuesday at Murray St.Â
