Salukis top Murray State in Extras

MURRAY, Ken. -- The Southern Illinois Salukis defeated OVC opponent Murray State at the Racer's ballpark in 11 innings, 8-5 Tuesday evening. The win garners the Salukis' 21st on the season, 19th in non-conference play.
Right-hander Jake Combs got the start on the bump in the Salukis' (21-8, 2-1 MVC) midweek match. Combs collected only two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in his four innings pitched before reliever Jordan Gould took over.Â
The Racers (15-12, 1-5 OVC) got the bats moving first, a double down the right-field line by right-fielder Brennan McCullough drew in one in hte bottom of the first inning to put MSU on the board.
Big second and third innings for the Salukis widened the scoring gap in the game. In the top of the second, a sacrifice-fly into left from first-baseman Ryan Rodriguez sent right-fielder Nathan Bandy running home. Later in the third, SIU drew in four more with a two-run single into left-center field from designated hitter Darren Taylor and another two-run single through the right side off the bat of left-fielder Pier-Olivier Boucher to extend the lead, 5-1.
Murray State came back to tie the ballgame in the later innings. A wild pitch sent one Racer run in in the fifth, an RBI-single up the middle from first-baseman Wes Schad margined a three-run game in the sixth inning.
Later in the bottom of eight, a balk on the mound sent another Murray State run on the board, while the Racers sent the game into extras in the ninth with a sacrifice-fly off the bat of third-baseman Bryson Bloomer.
A scoreless 10th inning, the Salukis came back with a two-run single on the right side in the 11th. Shortstop Kaeber Rog picked up his 17th multi-hit game of the season and his 52nd hit on the season with the RBI shot. A later wild pitch from Racer reliever Cade Vernon sent J.T. Weber running home from third and solidifying the score 8-5.
Closer Trey McDaniel earned his fourth win, now 4-0 in the season, in the ninth and extra innings on Johnny Reagan Field. The right-hander drew a season-high seven strikeouts and allowing only one run off of four hits.
SIU is back for the next weekend series, challenging MVC foe the Purple Aces of Evansville inside Braun Stadium in Evansville. First pitch is set for Friday at 6pm.
