
Chapman, Weber, Jensen power SIU past SIUE,4-0

Carbondale, Il. … Saluki starter Ben Chapman (1-2) tossed SIU's first complete game shutout of the season and J.T. Weber and Zack Jensen homered as SIU completed a doubleheader sweep of SIUE with a 4-0-win Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium. SIU (26-9) has won six of its last seven games and is 17-5 at home in 2022.
Former Cougar Jack Rigoni, who was 2 for 5 vs. Southern in a 2019 game while playing for SIUE, scored the game's first run in the second inning. Darren Taylor drove in Rigoni, who'd doubled, with a single.
Weber made it 3-0 SIU with a two run opposite field HR in the fifth inning (https://twitter.com/i/status/1515487915480166402). Weber parked a low and away pitch just beyond the right field fence for his 14th HR of the season and the 31st of his career. Weber is tied with Tyler Bullock (2008-10) for second place on the Salukis' career HR list, four behind first place Robert Jones (36, 1983-86). Cody Cleveland singled two hitters prior to Weber's HR.
C Zack Jensen's towering home run to left field in the 5th inning capped the Salukis' scoring. It was Jensen's second home run of the season.
The Salukis scored all their runs off Cougars' starter Kaid Karnes (3-3), who also pitched a complete game.
The Salukis completed the seven-inning win in one hour, 51 minutes as Chapman scattered four hits to 28 batters while throwing a career-high 111 pitches. It was the fifth 100+ pitch game of his two-year Saluki career (23 starts, 119.2 IP). The Salukis play their next four games on the road as they visit Austin Peay for a single game Tuesday before resuming Missouri Valley Conference play with a three-game series at Dallas Baptist beginning Friday April 22nd.
SALUKI NOTES: SIU's won seven games in a row vs. SIUE. SIUE's last victory over SIU came in 1992 in a game played at Busch Stadium. The Salukis, 3-0 vs. the Cougars this season, will play at SIUE on May 10th … Weber's HR was his first since April 3rd ending a season-long six-game homerless streak. He's hit 29 homers over the last two seasons (95 games; 0.3 per game). He shares the MVC HR lead (14) and leads the league in runs scored (44) … SIU's four home runs during Saturday's DH raised the Salukis' team HR total to 54 for the season. SIU is averaging 1.5 home runs per game. That's .1 HR per game higher than last year's Saluki team which hit a school-record 84 home runs … Chapman's CG was SIU's first since Brad Harrison's seven inning complete game win over Bradley in 2021 MVC Tournament … Chapman tossed SIU's first CG shutout of the season and it's fourth overall shutout of 2022 … SS Kaeber Rog began with the weekend #2 in the nation in hits (62). He was one for seven in Saturday's DH (NCAA current hit totals unavailable as of press time). Rog still leads the MVC in hits (62).
