The Austin Peay Governors used a trio of three-run innings to down the Southern Illinois Salukis, 11-4 Tuesday in non-conference play at Raymond C. Hand Park.
After the Salukis went ahead 3-2 with a three-run top of the second inning, the Governors put up three-spots in the third, fourth and eighth innings to seal the win and split the season series with Southern.
Austin Peay jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Governors used a leadoff single followed by a two-run home run from T.J. Foreman to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Southern wasted little time taking back the lead in the top of the second. Nathan Bandy socked a one-out single to right field and Pier Olivier-Boucher followed with his fifth home run of the season to knot the game at 2-all. Ryan Rodriguez then singled to right, advanced to second on a balk and came around to score on an error off the bat of Grey Epps.
The Governors answered with back-to-back three-spots in the third and fourth innings to retake the lead. Three-straight singles followed by a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly staked Austin Peay to a 5-3 advantage after three innings. In the fourth, the Governors used three walks and two hits to plate three and go ahead, 8-3.
The Salukis got a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Evan Martin, but the Governors once again responded with a three-run inning. In the eighth, a one-out Saluki error kept the inning alive and Austin Peay made sure to take advantage. After SIU reliever Ben Riffe got Foreman to strike out for what should have been the third out of the frame, the Governors loaded the bases on a board line 3-2 pitch that was called a ball. APSU's Jack Alexander then cleared the bases with a three-run double.
SIUÂ used six different pitchers Tuesday. Starting pitcher Jake Combs was saddled with the loss after he gave up four earned runs in three innings of work. Jordan Bloemer (1.2 IP // 1 H // 1 K), Jake Kuntzendorf (1 IP // 1 H) and Matthew Steidl (1 IP / 0 H) each put up scoreless innings in relief.Â
Six different Salukis recorded a hit led by Boucher's fifth home run of the season.Â
SIU is back in action this weekend with a key three-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Dallas Baptist. Friday's series opener begins at 6:30 p.m.
