The Southern Illinois University baseball team dropped game one of its Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader against the Illinois State Redbirds, 4-1, Friday afternoon.
The Salukis missed out on an opportunity to lock up the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament and at least a share of the MVC crown with the loss. Southern can clinch at least a share of its first MVC regular season title since 1990 with a win in Friday's nightcap.
SIU put a runner on base in five of nine innings, which included its lead runner on in three of those innings, but Illinois State's pitching combination of Sean Sinisko and Cameron Mabee proved to be too much. Sinisko got his second win of the season after he threw six innings and allowed just one run on five hits while Mabee threw three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to pick up his first save of the season. SIU starting pitcher Noah Farmer took the tough luck loss as he threw seven innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Jordan Gould came on in relief and allowed one earned run in his inning of work.
Illinois State got out to an early lead with a solo home run from Adam Cernak in the bottom of the first. Farmer settled in and retired the next seven batters he faced in order and Southern tied the game in the top of the third on Kaeber Rog's 13th home run of the season.
Farmer worked out of bases loaded trouble in the bottom of the fourth and then retired the side in the fifth to keep it a 1-1 game. Farmer ran into trouble in the sixth, as a double and a two-out single gave the Redbirds a 2-1 lead.
After Southern went down in order in the top of the seventh, Illinois State added to its lead with a run on a pair of singles in the bottom half of the frame. In the eighth, the Redbirds tacked on an insurance run with their second solo home run of the game.
Nick Hagedorn went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the Salukis at the plate. Jack Rigoni, J.T. Weber, Ron and Pier-Olivier Boucher each had a hit in the loss.
Game two gets underway at 3:45 p.m.
