CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (3-2-2) scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw vs. Drake in its first conference match of the season.
"The girls played a lot stronger physically in the second half," head coach Craig Roberts said. "Today, they showed relentlessness and tenacity to get back in the game and get the goals back."Â
Both of Drake's goals came inside the first half. Brooke Davies got the scoring started in the opening 10 minutes, followed by Makenna Shepard who scored in the 38th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.Â
The Salukis got going in the second half, creating more chances on the offensive end to go along with an improved defensive effort.
The chances would ultimately lead to a goal for Southern Illinois in the 84th minute, as Sam Dodd scored her first goal of the season off of a Liz Brechtel assist to make it a 2-1 game.
With their back against the wall, the Salukis found an equalizer two minutes later through Quinn Parks. Parks saw the ball fall to her inside the box and slotted it into the back-of-the-net to complete the exciting comeback.Â
"The team really stepped up in the last 25 minutes," Roberts said. "We never gave up, and we really wanted to win it."
The draw was Southern Illinois' second this season, giving the team a record of 3-2-2 after its first Missouri Valley Conference match of 2022.Â
With the result, the Salukis have also extended their unbeaten streak to five games, going 3-0-2 during that span.
Southern Illinois will be on the road for its next match, which will be at Belmont on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
