CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (4-2-2) earned its first league win under head coach Craig Roberts with a 2-0 shutout at Belmont on Sunday.
"Belmont is a very well-coached team," Roberts said. "To get a win against such a well-established program and a coach that's been there for over 12 years, it's a positive result."
The Salukis' defense got off to a strong start in Nashville, blanking the Bruins in the first half. Goalkeeper Maddy Alaluf made three saves to help keep the score level at 0-0.Â
The defensive battle continued in the second half, with neither side being able to score through 70 minutes of play.Â
At the 75th minute mark, the Salukis were able to change that through Christy Murauskis. Murauskis beat opposing goalkeeper Sarah Doyle after a saved penalty to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead.Â
Kaitlin DuCharme extended the Salukis' lead in the 82nd minute to secure the 2-0 win for Southern Illinois. DuCharme's goal came after she found room at the top of the box, and put her shot into the bottom left corner.
"Team effort all of the way through," Roberts said. "We're not relying on superstars, we rely on a team. When each girl is called upon, they put forth their role and their effort."Â
The Salukis out-shot Belmont, 12-9, in the match and 8-5 in terms of shots-on-goal. Alaluf tallied her third shutout of the season with a five-save effort in the win.Â
"I felt that we remained composed at the end to do what we needed to do to win the game," Roberts said. "Each player, when they had to step in to help us, did their job and that's what got us the victory."
Southern Illinois is now 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play after Sunday's match. The league win is the first under Roberts, who is in his first season with the program, and it extends the team's unbeaten streak to six games.Â
The Salukis will return home on Thursday to host Missouri State at 6 p.m. at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.
