CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to the Drake Bulldogs in four sets (28-30, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25) Friday night. With the loss, the Salukis move to 9-6 (2-1 MVC) while the Bulldogs improve to 11-5 (2-1 MVC).
SIU fought its way back in the first set after going down 23-19. The Salukis would go on to score five of the next six points and tie the frame at 24-24. Southern had a chance to put Drake away in the first after an Imani Hartfield kill put the Salukis in front 27-26 but the Bulldogs would come back to rally and take the first set 30-28.Â
Much like the first set, the Salukis had to fight their way back but we're able to thanks to a 7-2 run near the halfway mark of the frame. The Salukis wouldn't look back as they held on to their lead and won the second set in fairly convincing fashion. Drake was able to pull away in the final two frames thanks to a .500 hitting percentage in the third frame, led by Haley Bush who finished the set with five kills and 18 total on the night. Aside from hitting at a high-clip, the Bulldogs tallied 20 total blocks on the night for their second-highest total on the season.Â
Nataly Garcia led the Salukis offensively with 22 kills, her second match in a row with 20 or more kills. Garcia currently leads the Salukis with 3.17 kills per set. Ceci Bulmahn also had a very productive night for SIU, breaking her season-high with 17 kills to go along with 12 digs.Â
Sophomore setter Anna Jaworski had her second consecutive match with 50 or more assists, finishing the night with a team-high 55 assists. After tonight, Jaworski increased her assists per set average to 10.90, which leads the Valley.Â
The Salukis look to bounce back Saturday, Oct. 1 as the Panthers of Northern Iowa come to Carbondale for a 5 p.m. matchup at Davies Gym.
