CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University stayed hot on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Senior Day.
Purdue Fort Wayne entered the match with a record of 2-1-2, and were coming off of a 1-0 victory over Ball State on Thursday -- where Craig Roberts spent nine seasons as a head coach.
The Mastodons opened the scoring in the 14th minute, with Mackenzie Evans giving the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.Â
The Salukis were able to find an answer later on in the first half, as junior McKinley Stiff's long-ranged strike found the back-of-the-net to bring the match level at 1-1. This would remain the score through the half.
Into the second half, senior Kaitlin DuCharme scored in the 58th minute to put the Salukis ahead for the first time in the match. The goal was DuCharme's first of the season, and ended up being the decisive goal on Senior Day.Â
"The girls have taken another step forward in the right direction," Roberts said. "I thought defensively, we played really well all of the way through. We managed the game better than what we did before."
Senior Maddy Alaluf was strong again in goal for Southern Illinois, allowing just one goal and making three saves. Alaluf has now made eight saves and allowed one goal in her last two appearances.Â
The Salukis have out-scored their opponents 4-1 in their last two matches, improving their record to 2-2 on the year.Â
Prior to kick-off, Southern honored its 15 seniors with a pregame ceremony dedicated to each of the players who are in their final year with the program.
"It was an enjoyable win for the seniors who are a special set of individuals with amazing characters and desire, and I'm really happy we could get the result for them today," Roberts said.
