CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University earned a 1-1 draw against the SIUE Cougars after Liz Brechtel found the back-of-the-net in the second half.Â
"We showed resilience in the second half and I felt by the end of the game, we were the better team," head coach Craig Roberts said.Â
Neither of the two sides were able to get going offensively in the first half, with both the Salukis and Cougars going into the second half without a goal.Â
The match's first goal came in the 66th minute, with SIUEÂ jumping ahead after an SIU own-goal that came off of a corner and a cluster in the penalty area.
Brechtel quickly responded for the Salukis, taking a pass from Emma Spotak and slotting her game-tying goal into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 in the 69th minute. The assist was Spotak's first of the season, and the goal was Brechtel's team-leading second this year. In her last three games, Brechtel, the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, has scored twice and assisted once.Â
"She [Brechtel] is a tremendous individual," Roberts said. "She's a versatile player. Numerous players on our team played in different spots tonight that we needed to adapt to, and we showed the versatility of how we are growing."
The Salukis nearly found a late winner, but opposing goalkeeper Taylor Spiller made a game-saving stop to keep the match level.Â
SIU goalkeeper Maddy Alaluf allowed one goal and made three saves in 90 minutes played.Â
The draw was the Salukis' first of the season, bringing their record to 2-2-1 on the year. Southern Illinois will go out on the road for its next match on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State.Â
