CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University (3-2-1) extended its unbeaten streak to four games after the Salukis defeated SEMO, 1-0, on Sunday.
"We were really delighted with this one," head coach Craig Roberts said. "We haven't had too many away games, so it's always good preparation for going into conference. I felt the girls adapted really well to the preparation on what we needed to do."
The Salukis got on the board in the 30th minute through senior Emma Spotak. Spotak got past both the Redhawks' defense and goalkeeper, leading to an empty net for the senior forward. The goal was Spotak's first of the season, and proved to be the decisive one in the match.
"She [Spotak] was tenacious, and was very composed when she finished," Roberts said.Â
Southern Illinois held SEMO off the scoresheet in the second half to complete the shutout and earn the 1-0 victory. Senior Maddy Alaluf had another stellar performance in-goal, making 11 saves in the win. The Salukis have allowed two goals in their last four games.Â
"The goalkeeping success we've been having is down to the way the girls are battling at practice," Roberts said. "We have four fantastic goalkeepers who are pushing each other so it raises the standard."
SIU concluded its non-conference portion of the schedule with a record of 3-2-1. The Salukis will begin Missouri Valley Conference play next Sunday at 1 p.m vs. Drake at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex.Â
