MURRAY, KY. — Frank Bellino and Andrew Watson led the way for the Salukis in The Buddy Championship, which wrapped up the final round earlier today. Seven Salukis competed over the last two days through 54 holes.
"Having 4 guys finish in the Top 15 on the leaderboard is something that is very exciting," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. " I thought Coach Magnusson did a good job of having the guys prepared to play this week both physically and mentally. It was great to be able to have the opportunity to see our players compete and I hope we will use this as a learning opportunity to continue to grow and improve."
Bellino posted back-to-back rounds under par with his final round of 68 (-3) being the second-best score of the third round, only one shot behind 67 (-4) by four other competitors in the field.
Watson had two of his three rounds under par, posting scores of 70 (-1) in the first and third rounds of The Buddy.
Oliver Ulrich had his first tournament experience of the fall season, posting a second-round score of 69 (-2). He finished the Tournament tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
A day after celebrating his birthday, Braden Hoisington finished tied for 15th and posted back-to-back scores of 69 (-2) in the first and second round to sit in the top 10 entering the final day of play earlier this morning.
The final two Salukis in The Buddy were Peyton Thevenot and Justin Wingerter. Thevenot finished tied for 27th and Wingerter tied for 36th.
"We had lots of Saluki career low finishes and scores shot this week which is always nice to see. Oliver Ulrich with a Top 20 in his first collegiate event is impressive. Andrew Watson and Frank Bellino securing their first Saluki Top 10s is equally as impressive. We also had Peyton Thevenot shoot his Saluki career low round and had his Saluki career low finish. Braden Hoisington posted two rounds in the 60s during this event alone and he shot only two rounds in the 60s for the entire season last year so lots of good stuff happening this week. I'm proud of the efforts that all 6 players put forth this week and I know this will only make our entire team stronger as we progress throughout the year."
Southern Illinois will now turn its attention to the White Sands Bahamas Invitational on Paradise Island, which is set to begin on Friday.
