CARBONDALE, Ill. - A short-handed Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-3) came up short on Sunday afternoon against North Texas, losing 79-73 to the Mean Green.
"What I'm most proud of is how my team stuck together," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "Those young ladies battled for each other and they followed the game plan."
Southern Illinois was without Jaidynn Mason, Shemera Williams, and Paige Clubb in Sunday's loss.
Entering the game, North Texas held a 3-1 record with all three wins coming in games decided by at least 23 points. SIU's 73 points are the most scored against the Mean Green in a UNT victory this season.
The Salukis trailed at the end of the opening 10 minutes by a score of 16-11. In the second quarter, SIU got going offensively, out-scoring the Mean Green, 24-13. Laniah Randle scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field in the first half to pace Southern Illinois.
North Texas scored 23 points in the third quarter and 27 points in the fourth to earn the 79-73 win. SIU's largest offensive output of the game came in the final 10 minutes, where Southern scored 28 points.
SIU shot 52.8% from the field in the loss against a Mean Green team that had allowed a field-goal percentage of around 28% on the year prior to Sunday. This ranked 11th in the country.
"Our young ladies shot 72 percent in the fourth quarter, they shot 68 percent in the second quarter," Bond-White said. "They executed. There were a couple times where we were pushing, just trying to force the issue. Bring it out, make them guard too. It showed our kids what they're capable of doing against a pretty good team."
Southern had four players in double-figures, with Randle (17), Seairra Hughes (15), Quierra Love (13), and Tyranny Brown (13) all scoring at least 13 points in the game.
The Salukis, now 1-3, will head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the San Juan Shootout, starting on Thursday, Nov. 23, against Charlotte on Thanksgiving Day.
