SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (2-3) came back from an 11-point deficit to earn a gritty, 55-52 victory over Charlotte on Thanksgiving Day in the opening game of the San Juan Shootout.
Charlotte got off to the stronger start on Thursday morning, leading 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams were effective on the defensive end in the second, with the 49ers out-scoring SIU, 14-11, in the quarter.
At the half, Charlotte, who entered the game with a 3-1 record on the season, was up by a score of 31-21.
Southern Illinois was dominant defensively in the third quarter, allowing just seven points to the 49ers while scoring 15 on the opposite end. Heading into the fourth, the Salukis trailed by two.
Quierra Love started the final quarter with a steal followed by a game-tying layup. One possession later, Love tallied another steal and assisted Laniah Randle, who gave the Salukis the two-point lead.
A pair of Charlotte free throws at the 1:50 mark of the fourth put the 49ers up, 52-49. SIU responded with consecutive scores coming from Tyranny Brown, who hit back-to-back floaters to give Southern a one-point advantage with 40 seconds remaining.
With 17 seconds left, Love grabbed her seventh steal of the game and hit a layup on the other end to give the Salukis a 55-52 lead. This would end up being the final score.
Love's seven steals are a career-high, while she also posted 10 points and three assists. Randle led the way in terms of scoring with 22 points, three shy of the most she has had in her Saluki career.
Southern Illinois improves to 2-3 on the season with the win, and will continue the San Juan Shootout tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (CT) against George Washington University.
