SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (3-3) continued its strong trip to San Juan on Friday, defeating George Washington, 66-55, to improve to 2-0 in the San Juan Shootout.
"Our kids are battling," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "They've bonded together, they're sticking together. We're resilient. My coaches have been putting together great game plans. We're guarding, we're rebounding, and we're playing hard and playing together."
Southern Illinois got off to a red-hot start on Friday, scoring 16 points on 54.55% shooting from the field in the first quarter. Defensively, SIU held George Washington to just 10 points through 10 minutes.
Paige Clubb led the way for Southern in a dominant second quarter performance that saw SIU out-score George Washington, 25-18. Clubb scored nine points, all coming from beyond the arc, while the Salukis shot 75% as a team. At the half, the Salukis led by a score of 41-28.
"Whenever you have continuity through substitution, you have a chance to be pretty special," Bond-White said. "We've been working really hard on our rotation, and our kids know the game plan."
After a big offensive first half that saw SIU shoot a combined 65% from the field between the two quarters, it was the defense that got it done in the final 20 minutes. Southern limited George Washington to 15 points in the third and took an 11-point lead into the fourth.
The Salukis stayed strong on the defensive end in the fourth and final quarter, holding the opposition to 12 points. George Washington scored fewer than 18 points in three of the four quarters on Friday, as the Salukis closed out the game and won by a final score of 65-55.
Laniah Randle had her second-straight 22-point game in the win, while Seairra Hughes scored 16 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting.
Southern Illinois, now 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in Puerto Rico, will play for the San Juan Shootout championship on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT against West Virginia, who is also 2-0.
