SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (3-4) concluded the San Juan Shootout with a 73-55 loss to West Virginia on Saturday. SIU ended the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Laniah Randle put-up a career-high 30 points in the loss. Randle scored at least 22 points in all three games in Puerto Rico, averaging 24.7 points-per-game throughout the tournament. The junior forward also had 11 rebounds and five steals on Saturday.
West Virginia got off to a fast start, leading 7-0 through the opening 90 seconds. The Salukis bounced-back following the early run by the Mountaineers, going a 9-2 run to tie the game at 9-9.
At the end of the first quarter, SIU trailed by a score of 16-15.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers out-scored SIU, 20-12, and shot 3-of-6 from deep and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Through the first half, West Virginia held a 36-27 lead in San Juan.
Southern posted a strong third quarter showing that saw it pace West Virginia, 17-14. The Mountaineers responded with a big fourth quarter outing, scoring 23 points compared to SIU's 11.
West Virginia's 73-55 victory gave them a 3-0 record in the San Juan Shootout, while Southern Illinois went 2-1.
The Salukis will return home on Dec. 6 to face SIUE at 11 a.m. at the Banterra Center.
