CARBONDALE, Ill. - In front of around 5,000 kids packing the Banterra Center, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-4) defeated SIUE, 77-53, to improve to .500 on the season.
"I thought we came out with great energy," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "I thought that was a result of the kids in the building. They were electric."
The Salukis got off to a fast start, leading 11-2 at the 5:18 mark of the first quarter after a Laniah Randle layup. Se'Quoia Allmond hit a three-pointer to close-out the opening 10 minutes, giving SIU the 22-13 lead heading into the second.
SIUE's leading scorer, KK Rodriguez, left the game due to an injury at 7:12 in the second quarter and did not return. Rodriguez finished with 13 points.
After a Tyranny Brown jumper and a Tkiyah Nelson free throw, the Salukis entered the halftime break with a 34-23 lead. Randle had nine first-half points while Brown had seven to lead the way for Southern through 20 minutes.
Southern was dominant in the third, out-scoring the Cougars, 24-12. The 24 points were the most the Salukis scored in a single quarter throughout the game.
SIU closed the game out by scoring 19 points in the fourth compared to SIUE's 18, winning by a final score of 77-53.
