CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (5-4) earned its fourth win in its last five games on Saturday when it defeated Saint Louis, 75-67, at the Banterra Center.
"I want to tip my half to my coaching staff," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "The gameplan that we came up with defensively to keep them off balance culminated in the fourth quarter. Both teams were tired, but what we did to try to keep them off balance worked."
Jaidynn Mason scored a career-high 26 points in the win, while Seairra Hughes and Laniah Randle both posted double-doubles against the Billikens.
The Salukis were aggressive early in the ballgame, getting to the free throw line 10 times and shooting 8-for-10 in the opening quarter. SIU out-scored Saint Louis, 21-15, in the first, but the visitors hit a jumper at the buzzer through Camreé Clegg to make it a six-point game.
Saint Louis again hit a buzzer beater to finish off the first half, this time from deep via Kyla McMakin. McMakin drained a contested three-pointer to tie the game at 47-47 entering the halftime break. Southern was out-scored, 22-16, in the quarter.
There wasn't much to separate the two sides out of the break, with SLU holding the edge at 19-18 in the third quarter alone.
The Salukis responded with a big fourth-quarter performance, pacing the Billikens, 20-11, to win by a final score of 75-67. Southern Illinois limited Saint Louis to just 2-of-16 shooting from the field in the final 10 minutes.
Four different players scored in double-figures for SIU. Mason's 26 points led all scorers, while Hughes had 14, Se'Quoia Allmond had 12, and Randle posted 11. Randle has tallied three-straight double-doubles, and now has four on the season.
One more game remains before Missouri Valley Conference play begins for a Saluki squad that is now 5-4 on the year, and that will be a trip to Stillwater, Okla., next Sunday to face Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
