CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (5-6, 0-1 MVC) fell to Drake, 78-59, in its Missouri Valley Conference opener on Saturday at the Banterra Center.
"The score definitely isn't indicative," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "We let the last three minutes get away from us with some turnovers at the end that led to transition."
Southern Illinois was without Jaidynn Mason in the loss, who came down with the flu prior to the game.
Drake had a 21-7 lead after a pair of Grace Berg free throws at the 1:12 mark in the first quarter, but Quierra Love had a three-pointer, steal, and then layup to cut the lead down to 21-12 heading into the second.
Both teams scored 19 points in the second quarter, giving Drake the 40-31 advantage at the end of the opening half. The Bulldogs shot 53.3% from the field in the half, but had 15 turnovers. Love had seven points and four steals while Laniah Randle's eight points paced the Salukis.
The SIU offense continued to struggle in the third, shooting just 28.6% from the field while allowing 50.0% shooting for Drake. Se'Quoia Allmond had a similar sequence as to what Love did in the first quarter, as she hit a three-pointer, grabbed a steal, and made a layup to produce quick offense for Southern. SIU trailed, 59-49, entering the final 10 minutes.
The Bulldogs limited the Salukis to 10 points in the fourth quarter, out-scoring the hosts, 19-10, to win by a final score of 78-59. Southern forced 28 turnovers in the loss, but shot 27.6% from the field and 28.6% from deep.
Love led SIU in scoring with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while also tallying four steals. Randle, 11, and Allmond, 11, were both in double-figures.
Southern Illinois will look to bounce-back on Thursday, Jan. 4, at 6 p.m. when it hosts UIC in its second MVC game of the season.
