CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (5-7, 0-2 MVC) were held in-check on Thursday night against UIC, falling by a final score of 66-59.
"Another game with foul trouble, which kind of took away our consistency offensively," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "Our defense carried us for most of the game."
The Salukis out-scored UIC, 16-13, in the first quarter and then 16-15 in the second to take a 32-28 lead into the halftime break. SIU's three-point shooting helped lead the way in the opening half, going 4-for-8 from deep inside the first 20 minutes.
Senior Quierra Love led the Salukis with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting from beyond-the-arc in the first two quarters.
UIC got back-on-track in the third quarter, out-scoring SIU, 19-13. The Flames shot 52.94% from the field in the third and held Southern Illinois to a field-goal percentage of 26.67%.
The Flames closed-out the Salukis with strong defense in the fourth, limiting SIU to 14 points on 26.67% shooting in the final 10 minutes to win the game by a final score of 66-59. Off the bench, Tara Green scored a career-high 23 points to pace UIC in its road victory.
On Southern's side, junior Laniah Randle finished with a team-high 16 points while Love ended up with 15. The senior guard also had three steals, which ties her for ninth all-time in SIU history in career steals (164) with Cartaesha Macklin.
Southern Illinois, now 0-2 in conference play, will search for its first MVC win of the season on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Valparaiso at the Banterra Center.
