CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (6-7, 1-2 MVC) got back in the win column on Saturday with a 75-66 victory against Valparaiso.
"What jumps off the page for me and the most impressive stat for me is free throws," Kelly Bond-White said.
The Salukis shot a blistering 89.7% at the free throw line, the highest mark of the season, shooting 26-of-29 overall. In the first quarter alone, SIU went 9-of-10 at the charity stripe en route to a 23-point opening quarter. Laniah Randle and Jaidynn Mason both scored eight points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
"I liked the tempo early on that we were playing with," Bond-White said. "I gave our point guards a lot of leeway to control the tempo. If primary wasn't there, look for secondary actions and then get into our offense a little bit quicker."
Southern Illinois had another 20-point performance in the second quarter, out-scoring Valpo, 20-10, before the halftime break. SIU shot 7-of-13 from the field in the quarter, raising the first half field-goal percentage to 48.1%. Randle's 16 points led all scorers through 20 minutes.
In the third, the Salukis out-scored the Beacons, 18-15, giving the hosts a 61-42 lead entering the fourth. Southern posted a field-goal percentage of 54.5% and were 2-of-4 from deep in the third quarter.
Despite Valpo pacing SIU, 24-14, in the fourth quarter, Southern held on to win by a final score of 75-66. Randle finished the game with her sixth 20+ point outing of the season, scoring 24 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line.
Mason, 16, Quierra Love, 11, and Paige Clubb, 11, also scored in double-figures for the Salukis. Clubb's 11 points are a new career-high.
Southern Illinois, now 6-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play, will head to Illinois State on Wednesday, Jan. 10, to face the Redbirds at 6:30 p.m.
