NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State proved to be too much to handle for the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (6-8, 1-3 MVC) on Wednesday night, as the Salukis fell, 76-43, to the Redbirds.
The Redbirds got off to a hot start, out-scoring SIU, 20-11, in the opening quarter. Illinois State shot 8-of-16 from the field in the first 10 minutes, while Southern Illinois shot 5-of-22.
SIU continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter, scoring just nine points compared to the Redbirds' 18. Southern went 3-of-19 from the field in the quarter and hit one three-pointer via Quierra Love.
Illinois State held a 38-20 lead at the end of the opening half. Love's five points led the team at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Redbirds' offense exploded for 24 points, while Southern scored 12. Illinois State posted a field-goal percentage of 57.1% in the third and went 3-of-5 from three-point range.
The Redbirds paced the Salukis, 14-11, in the fourth to win by a final score of 76-43.
Southern Illinois shot 19% from the field in the loss. Love and Laniah Randle led the Salukis with eight points on the night.
The Salukis, now 6-8 overall and 1-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will stay on the road as they travel to Bradley on Saturday to face the Braves at 2 p.m.
