Salukis add transfer Leon Heitz
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men's golf team announced the signing of transfer Leon Heitz on Monday, the program's fourth signee this year. Heitz, a junior transfer from Fairleigh Dickinson University, was named the NEC Freshman of the Year with a scoring average of 73.8 through 10 tournaments with the Knights.
"We are thrilled to add Leon to the Saluki family" said SIU Director of Golf Justin Fetcho. "He has performed at a high level in D1 golf already by being name the Freshman of the Year in his conference. Leon drives the ball in play and gives himself a chance to hit a ton of greens."
Heitz currently averaged 71.92 through five events this fall with three Top-15 finishes.
"We look for with his two years of D1 experience already to be able to step in here and make an immediate impact on this program for his remaining two years of eligibility," said Fetcho. "Leon also fits the bill of being a student-athlete as he has been a successful student in the classroom. All of that combined together makes Leon a great fit for the Salukis."
Heitz hails from Münster, Germany and his collegiate highlights include:
- Named to the All-NEC First Team
- T-2nd finish at NEC Championship with a score of 223
- T-2nd finish at Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate with a score of 140
