
Late Push Not Enough as Salukis Drop Series Finale at Wofford, 5-4

Spartanburg, S.C. – Southern Illinois baseball's rally fell short in the series finale at Wofford Sunday afternoon, falling to the Terriers 5-4 at King Field in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The loss moves Southern to 2-2 on the season while Wofford improved to 2-1.
Pier-Olivier Boucher belted a solo home run in the ninth to pull Southern to within a run, but Wofford was able to close the door with a ground ball to end the game.
Wofford outhit Southern Illinois 11-8, but the true difference in the ballgame was the three errors in the field for the Salukis which led to extended innings. The Salukis also allowed three steals to the Terriers in the game.
SIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Kaeber Rog scored from third on a dropped third strike at the plate. Wofford would get that run back and another in the third inning as the Terriers picked up a solo home run from Marshall Toole and an RBI double from Brice Martinez.
Southern scored two in the fifth to go back in front 3-2 before Wofford tallied a trio of runs off of reliever Tanner Lewis in the bottom half of the inning. They would get an important insurance run in the sixth off the bat of Ryan Galanie to go ahead 5-3.
Lewis would be charged with the loss after going four innings in relief and allowing three runs while striking out four. Paul Bonzagni made his season debut for Southern on the mound, allowing six hits in four innings while retiring two on punchouts.
Branton Little earned the win in relief for the Terriers. After pitching two innings. Lucas Mahlstedt was credited with the three-inning save.
Coulson Buchanan went four innings in the start for Wofford, allowing one earned run and striking out five.

The Salukis will stay on the road with a midweek matchup at Austin Peay on Tuesday.
