Salukis Win Big in Home Opener at Coach B Classic

Northern Kentucky got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first after a pair of walks and a single to center field. Elliott Stinson would settle in however, giving up just one run on one hit with seven strikeouts in three innings pitched. Hannah Hockerman would come in to replace Stinson in the fourth as she continued to shut the Norse offense down. In three innings, Hockerman gave up no runs and no hits with two strikeouts and just one walk.Â
The Salukis totaled a season-high in both hits (11) and batting average (.407) on their way to putting up another season-high 10 runs.Â
After going three up and three down in the first, Southern put across three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Salukis continued to extend its lead in the fifth with a rally that began with a Elizabeth Warwick single that was followed by back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles from Jackie Lis, Rylie Hamilton, and Anna Carder.Â
Freshman catcher Anna Carder went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
After another scoreless inning for the Salukis defense in the sixth, Southern led 6-1 heading to the bottom half of the inning. Erin Lee notched her first collegiate RBI with a single that scored Emma Austin followed by Elizabeth Warwick's second single of the game. With two runners on, Jackie Lis came to the plate and sent a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall that ended the game in six innings. Lis extended her hitting-streak to eight games, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a season-high four RBIs. The freshman shortstop is hitting .378 on the year with two home runs and three doubles.Â
Southern Illinois will play game one of its doubleheader against Northern Kentucky at 3 pm on Saturday followed by a 5:15 pm start against DePaul in the fourth and final game of the day at Charlotte West Stadium.
