Salukis Take Midweek Matchup on the Road at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – SIU's Nathan Bandy tied a season-high with three base hits and the Salukis were solid on the mound en route to a 6-2 road win over UT Martin Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing skid.
It marked the eighth multi-hit game of the season for Bandy as he finished 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Dawgs. Steven Loden joined Bandy with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a hit-by-pitch.
Jake Combs and Matthew Steidl were rock solid for the Salukis on the mound as the duo tag-teamed the midweek affair ahead of SIU's trip to Southern Indiana Wednesday. Combs set season highs in the outing with 6.1 innings pitched to go along with six strikeouts. The right-hander did not allow a walk while giving up just two runs on seven hits in the no-decision.
Steidl entered in relief with a runner on second and one out and was able to get out of the jam that kept the score tied at two apiece. The righty allowed just one base hit and issued only one walk in his outing on his way to his first win of the season.
Southern Illinois capitalized on their momentum on the mound and turned it into offense in the eighth with a three-run inning to create separation. With the bases loaded and one out, Loden doubled home two runs with a liner down the right field line before Cole Christman added another run on a sacrifice fly before the Skyhawks were able to get out of the inning.
Steidl allowed his only hit of the day in the bottom of the eighth but quickly induced a ground ball and SIU turned its nation-leading 25th double play of the season before the senior struck out the third batter he faced in the frame.
SIU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth after bandy picked up a one-out single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to extend the SIU lead to 6-2 where it would finish as Steidl picked up the final three outs of the game.
Hits were even at eight apiece, but the Salukis took advantage of four walks and a hit batsman in the game. Leadoff men for SIU were 3-for-9 in the game and 4-for-19 with runners on base.
Zach Wager pitched three innings in his start for UTM. Colin Millar was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in the eighth, recording just one out.
