Salukis Begin MVC Schedule With 5-2 Win over Missouri State

"I thought we just came out a little bit nervous but I thought we settled in really nicely once we got a couple hits," said head coach Jen Sewell following the win. "We challenge them to just settle in and let our offense kind of take over a little bit and get our energy back and we did that through the 3-4-5 (innings). We scored right after they did which was a big deal."
After giving up a pair of runs in the top half of the third, the Salukis briefly trailed before taking the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Elizabeth Warwick got the first run across, driving in Aubree DePron on a double to left center after DePron singled. With Warwick on second, reigning MVC Newcomer of the Week Jackie Lis hit a two-run shot in the next at-bat to make it a 3-2 game. Lis wasn't done with just one home run however as she hit a solo-shot in the fifth inning to extend SIU's lead.
The freshman shortstop now has seven home runs, 23 runs, and 54 total bases on the year, all which lead the Valley after hitting four home runs in the Salukis last two games. She also is tied for the most RBIs with 22.
The Salukis totaled 11 hits on the day, which is the sixth time this season they've notched 10 or more hits. Emma Austin and Jackie Lis both went 3-for-4 while Sidney Jones had her first multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-3. Austin recorded an RBI-single in the fourth with the bases loaded as she roped a ball to left field.
Madi Eberle made the start for the Salukis and gave up just one earned run in the first three innings. With a 3-2 lead in the fourth, Elliott Stinson came into the circle for the Dawgs and held the Bears scoreless for the next three plus innings before Eberle re-entered the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Stinson didn't allow a hit with six strikeouts for the Salukis.
The Bears threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded after Eberle walked her first batter of the day but she was able to get the last out on the first pitch of the next at-bat on a ground ball to second base.
Southern Illinois will conclude its two-game series with Missouri State Wednesday afternoon for a noon start at Charlotte West Stadium.
