MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Freshmen swimmer Ruard van Renen wrapped up his historic season competing in the 200 Backstroke on the final day of the 2023 NCAA Division I National Championships.Â
In the prelims, Ruard shattered the SIU and Mid-American Conference Record swimming a time of 1:39.73. This time put him into the B Finals for the second consecutive night. Finishing with the 10th best qualifying time.Â
In the B finals Ruard swam another strong race. Coming up a little bit short of the record setting time he swam in prelims. He finished in 13th place overall with a time of 1:40.22.Â
Ruard claimed his second All-American Honorable Mention of the championships and closed out his legendary freshmen season.Â
Quote from Head Coach Geoff Hanson
"What a great way to wrap up a successful season for the program! Ruard with another All-America (Honorable Mention) performance, moving up from 31st seeded to 13th and scoring enough points to put SIU in position to finish 28th as a team at the NCAA Championship. It's a testament to the staff and to the team, and obviously Ruard, that we were able to break through at the national level for the first time since 1995. Lots to build on for the future!"
