Salukis Drop Series Opener to Evansville

Saluki (20-14, 8-2 MVC) designated hitter Bennett Eltoft put the Dawgs ahead early with an RBI double in the bottom of the first scoring Pier-Olivier Boucher from second, but the ground-rule double did not allow the second run from scoring and UE (20-13, 6-4 MVC) was able to get out of the inning without allowing another run.
Evansville answered back two innings later with a five-spot on the scoreboard. The Aces used five base hits in the innings before capping off the scoring run with a three-run home run off the bat of Mark Shallenberger. He hit his second home run of the day in the top of the fifth, and Evansville held a strong lead heading into the late stages.
Starting pitcher Ben Chapman (3-1) took his first loss of the season after three innings pitched, allowing five runs, five hits, and striking out one.
Nick Smith improved to 3-3 for the Aces after five innings allowing one run.
Kaeber Rog and Ryan Rodriguez both tallied two hits, while Nate Lyons and Bennett Eltoft collected the RBIs.
Right fielder Mark Shallenberger tallied three hits for Evansville, including two home runs and a double that resulted in six RBIs.
UP NEXT
The Salukis are set to host Evansville Saturday at 2 p.m. with Dan Callahan's Jersey Retirement ceremony taking place at approximately 1:35 p.m.
