
Pointer sets SIU record as Salukis impress at Gibson Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University track and field team finished inside the top five on both the men and women's side while Iaunia Pointer set another SIU record at Indiana State's Gibson Invitational.Â
With a score of 111.5, the men's team earned a second-place finish out of 20 schools at the meet. The women's team was fourth out of 18 opposing schools after tallying a score of 86. Indiana State was first on both the men and women's side.Â
The Salukis had an athlete finish first in seven different events over the weekend. In the men's 4x100 relay, Kyle Burgoni, Jeremiah Hamilton, Xavier Preston, and Christian Donatelli posted a time of 40.30 to win the event.
Brianna Nieset paced the competition in the women's 1500m, running a 4:38.90.Â
Breaking her own record set in 2022, Iaunia Pointer set a new program-best in the women's 100m dash, finishing first with a time of 11.31.Â
Southern Illinois swept the 3000m steeplechase on Saturday, with Rachel Anderson (10:40.37) winning the women's race and Dawson Smith (9:10.48) winning the men's.
Daniel Norris continued his strong outdoor campaign with another first-place finish in the men's discus, this time posting a mark of 54.49m (178-09).Â
The Salukis' final first-place finishers of the weekend came in the women's 4x400 relay, as Pointer, Shavell Riley, Miracle Berry, and Vashti Grey finished first after combining for a time of 3:47.71.Â
What's Next
Southern Illinois will look to carry the momentum into next week's Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will be hosted by Ohio State University from Friday, April 21, to Saturday, April 22.Â
