Salukis Shutout The Sycamores Twice For Series Sweep

Madi Eberle got the win in game one as she threw a complete game shutout allowing just two hits and two walks for her 12th win of the season. After picking up a pair of wins over the weekend, Eberle's ERA is down to 1.55 which is the third-best in the MVC and lowest-ERA amongst pitchers with over 50 innings pitched as she has totaled 86 on the year.Â
From the second to the start of the fifth inning, Eberle retired 13 straight batters including three-straight seven pitch innings as the Salukis defense made play after play. The Sycamores threatened a few times including loading the bases in the sixth with just one out but Eberle was able to get two outs on just two pitches to get out of the jam and send the Dawgs into the bottom half of the inning with momentum.Â
SIU struggled to get runs across despite finishing the game with five hits and four walks. Bailey Caylor produced an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth with two outs as she flared a single over the third baseman's head and into shallow centerfield scoring Kerrigan Gamm. Caylor had a hit in all three of the Salukis' wins over the weekend.Â
The one run was all the Salukis would need however as Eberle came back out in the seventh and shut Indiana State down once more.Â
The series finale mocked much of the first game as the Salukis shut down the Sycamores for seven more innings on their way to a 2-0 victory. Hannah Hockerman made the start in the circle for SIU and allowed just one hit and one walk in three innings of work. After giving up a walk to the leadoff hitter in the fourth, Elliott Stinson entered the game and picked up where Hockerman left off as she gave up just one hit and zero walks through the final four innings to pick up her 10th win of the season.Â
Struggling to score again against a tough Sycamore rotation, the Salukis relied on big hits in key moments to produce runs. Freshman Anna Carder continued to stay hot at the plate as she doubled off the right field wall to drive in the only two runs of the game in the third inning. During the Salukis' four-game week, Carder went 6-for-14 with seven RBIs including the walk-off double against SEMO Tuesday evening.
The Salukis relied heavily on their pitching staff over the weekend as Eberle, Hockerman, and Stinson allowed just seven hits and one run through 21 combined innings. With the win, the Salukis improve to 27-5 (9-2 MVC) while remaining unbeaten at home as the Sycamores lose their first MVC game and series of the year to fall to 17-17 (6-3 MVC).Â
