Salukis Drop Two In Doubleheader

The Dawgs got out to a hot start in game one with a six-run second inning but their lead was immediately cut down to just a run after the Redbirds would go for five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Tori Schullian tallied an RBI-single with the bases loaded to begin the rally that ended with a two-run double from Elizabeth Warwick. SIU scored its other three runs in the inning on a pair of bases loaded walks and a hit batter to total its six.
Rylie Hamilton hit her sixth home run of the season in the third inning to score two more runs following a two-out triple from Jackie Lis, who recorded her second triple of the series.Â
Following an insurance run in the seventh on an Illinois State error, the Salukis led 11-9 headed to the bottom half of the inning. A two-run double would tie the game before a wild pitch for the Salukis allowed the walk-off run to score as the Salukis would go down 11-12.
Illinois State would go on to carry that momentum into game two and defeat the Salukis once more by a final score of 10-1. The Redbirds held a 6-0 lead after the first three innings but were held scoreless for two consecutive innings as the Dawgs got their first run across in the fifth on an RBI-walk from Liz Warwick.Â
After going into a weather delay in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score still at 6-1, the Redbirds would go on to score four out of the delay on a pair of home runs to finish the game.
The Salukis will begin their postseason journey on Wednesday, May 10 against the UIC Flames at 7 PM in round one of the MVC Tournament.Â
