CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois swimming & diving assistant coach Ivan Sanchez is serving as a member of the Team Mexico staff at this week's Central American Games in El Salvador.
A 2005 Saluki swim/dive alum, Sanchez is entering his sixth year on the staff at SIU, and also competed as a member of the Mexican National Team from 1995-2008, when he qualified for three Olympic Trials (2000, 2004 and 2008) and competed in several international and national competitions.
"I am very honored for this opportunity to serve as one of the coaches for Team Mexico," Sanchez said. "It has always been a goal of mine to be selected as a coach for a national team, especially for my home country at the Central American Games, which I competed in myself for Mexico."
Two members of SIU's team are competing at the Games. Sophomore Karen Rodriguez will swim in the 400 Free/400 IM and 4 x 200 Free Relay. An incoming transfer from Nebraska, Beatriz Padron will compete in the 50/100/200 Free, 50/100 Fly, 50 Back and Free/Medley relays.
"I am very happy for Ivan to be part of the Team Mexico coaching staff at this prestigious international meet," said SIU head coach Geoff Hanson. "It's a great step for him in his coaching career, and a great step for Saluki Swimming. I know he, Karen and Beatriz will represent the program very well in El Salvador."
