CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (1-4-3) lost to UIC, 1-0, on Sunday in the Missouri Valley Conference opener.Â
"We have to move the ball quicker and make sure that we have numbers up," head coach Graeme Orr said. "We were forcing it too much at times, hoping that we'd get an opportunity."
Southern Illinois had numerous chances in the opening half, including a 26th minute opportunity by Emma Spotak. Kaitlin DuCharme played Spotak in on the break, who shot it just wide to the left to keep the score at 0-0.Â
In the final five minutes of the half, Spotak again was on the break when she was taken down outside of the box by UIC goalkeeper Sara Sanabria. Sanabria was given a straight red card for the foul.Â
Despite being down to 10 players for the remainder of the match, UIC was able to take the lead in the 66th minute when Makenna Maloy scored off of a Sophia Jaime assist. The 1-0 lead would end up being the final score of the match.Â
Both teams had seven shots during the contest, with Dana Cruz's two shots leading the way for SIU. Goalkeeper Chantelle Symes made two saves in the loss.
The Salukis are now 0-1 in MVC play and 1-4-3 overall heading into a road trip to Iowa next week. SIU will first play at Drake on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., followed by a match at Northern Iowa on Sunday at 12 p.m.
