CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (6-3-5) fell to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), 2-1, on Sunday.
"I think they showed their experience and capitalized on it. When you look at the number of opportunities we had, we just didn't capitalize and show enough quality in the final third to get something from it," head coach Graeme Orr said.
The Panthers got off to a fast start and recorded the first shot of the game within the first two minutes of play. Northern Iowa quickly took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. The Salukis out-shot the Panthers in the first half, 7-5, but couldn't find the back-of-the-net.
In the second half, Northern Iowa once again found the back-of-the-net quickly, scoring in the 54th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Six minutes later, the Salukis responded when McKensey Bunch netted her fourth goal of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1. Kylie McDermott recorded her second assist of the season on the goal. Southern Illinois recorded eight shots in the second half but couldn't connect for an equalizer.
Goalkeeper Fabiana Solano recorded one save and faced six shots, including three shots-on-goal. Solano, along with four other Salukis, played the full 90 minutes.
The Salukis will host Missouri State on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m.
