CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (6-4-5) fell to Missouri State, 1-0, on Thursday.
"Proud of the team, disappointed in the final outcome," head coach Graeme Orr said. "The girls were fighting and backing up their units, and that's all we can ask for."
In the first half, Missouri State started quickly, recording a shot in the first minute. The Salukis were out-shot, 6-2, in the half. Dana Cruz had the Salukis' best scoring chance with a shot-on-goal that was saved by the opposing goalkeeper. Both Southern Illinois and Missouri State were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes.
The second half remained quiet until the final 15 minutes of play. Neither team could find the net until Missouri State scored in the 86th minute when Kaeli Benedict capitalized off a free kick, giving the Bears a late 1-0 lead. Saluki defender Marta Forne attempted to score the equalizer in the 88th minute but was unsuccessful.
Goalkeeper Fabiana Solano recorded three saves against the Bears. Seven Salukis, including all four defenders, played the full 90 minutes.
The Salukis will travel to Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday, Oct. 20, to face Belmont.
