CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (6-6-5) fell to Drake, 2-1, on Thursday.
"I'm proud of the girls. I thought we pressed a really good team, forced them into a lot of turnovers, and pushed until the end," head coach Graeme Orr said.
In the first half, Drake got off to a quick start, netting its first goal in the seventh minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs maintained their momentum and found the back-of-the-net again in the 19th minute to extend their lead to 2-0.
The Salukis responded in the 29th minute when McKensey Bunch scored her fifth goal of the season, cutting Drake's lead to 2-1. Guliana Balistreri notched her first assist of the season on the goal. Drake led 2-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, neither team was able to score. Both Southern Illinois and Drake created strong scoring opportunities. Balistreri had an opportunity in the 84th minute, and the Salukis earned a corner kick in the 88th minute but couldn't find the equalizer before time expired.
The Salukis and Bulldogs tied in total shots, and both goalkeepers recorded four saves. Five Salukis played the full 90 minutes, including goalkeeper Fabiana Solano and defender Lucy Horn.
Southern Illinois will close out the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Evansville.
