CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to Belmont in four sets Friday night (25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-27).
Belmont opened the first set with a quick 3-0 lead, but the Salukis regained momentum when Annabelle Sulish notched her first kill of the night. Southern Illinois tallied 15 kills and hit .265 to secure a 25-22 victory in the opening set.
Belmont responded by taking the next three sets. In the second, the Bruins capitalized on five Saluki errors to pull out a 25-22 win and even the match at one set each. Sets three and four were hard-fought as Southern Illinois kept the scores close, but ultimately fell to the Bruins. Southern finished with a .228 hitting percentage for the match while Belmont hit .258.
Leading the Salukis was Sulish who finished with a match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs. Kelly Franklin had 15 kills and a block, while Jillian Shaneyfelt recorded 13 digs and three service aces. Anna Jaworski facilitated the offense with 25 assists and added 10 digs.
Southern Illinois returns to action in Davies Gym on Saturday to face Murray State at 5 p.m.
