CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois volleyball dropped a five-set match Saturday night at Davies Gym to Murray State (20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16, 10-15). With the loss, the Salukis fell to 10-12 overall and 3-8 in Valley action.
Four Salukis had double-digit kills on the night led by Larissa Seger who paced SIU with 14 kills and a team-best .393 hitting percent. Kelly Franklin (12K, 15D) and Annabelle Sulish (12K, 23D) recorded double-doubles in the loss while Eva Krakwoski added 11 kills and a team-high six blocks in the loss.
As a team the Salukis hit just .223 while Murray State finished the match with a .282 hitting percentage. Lily Burnett had a match-high 19 kills for the Racers to go with 10 digs.
The Racers came out hot in the first set, jumping out to an early 14-6 lead. After SIU took the first two points of the match, Murray State scored 12 of the next 16 points at the midway point of the set. The Racers hit .452 in the opening set to take the early advantage after a 25-20 set win.
Southern Illinois bounced back in the second with a 25-23 set win to even the match. With six ties and five lead changes in the frame, it was Southern that would close the set with back-to-back points capped off with a solo block from Seger to claim the set win.
The Racers would once again take an advantage after claiming a 25-18 win in the third before the Salukis dominated in the fourth set, 26-16, with a .448 attacking percent to force a deciding fifth and final set.
The Salukis carried the momentum from the fourth into the fifth to take an 8-3 lead early but after the two squads switched sides Murray State reeled off a 5-0 run to tie things up before scoring four of the next six points to lead 13-10. The Racers would clinch the match win on an SIU attack error to improve to 12-8 on the year and 7-4 in the MVC.
