CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois basketball fans were able to take in the new-look Salukis for the first time this season as the Salukis defeated North Park, 106-71, in a public scrimmage at Banterra Center Tuesday night.
Five Salukis scored in double-figures in the game led by transfer guard Elijah Elliott who paced Southern with a game-high 21 points to go with four assists and three rebounds. Returners Kennard Davis Jr. and Jarrett Hensley added 13 points while Ali Dibba and Rolyns Aligbe scored 10 each. All 13 Salukis that saw the floor entered the scoring column.
Hensley put the Salukis on the scoreboard a minute into play before North Park drained a three to take a lead a possession later, but that would be the only time the Vikings would lead in the game as SIU reeled off a 14-3 run and never looked back.
Southern would shoot 59.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes, sharing the ball effectively with 13 assists on 19 made baskets to take a 53-32 lead into the break. Elliott led all scorers in the first with 13 points, including a 3-for-4 mark from behind the arc.
It was more of the same in the second half as SIU continued to run the court looking for easy baskets. The Salukis scored 66 points in the paint, including 22 points from 16 offensive rebounds.
As a team, the Salukis outrebounded the Vikings 53-24 in the game led by Davion Sykes who recorded 10 for Southern. Antwaun Massey (9) and Tyler Bey (8) nearly broke double-digits in rebounds off the bench for SIU.
Southern finished the game shooting 63 percent from the field (41-65) and 50 percent (7-14) from behind the arc. SIU also shot 17-for-23 from the charity stripe in the game.
Davante Robinson led North Park with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
