VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team (6-2-5) defeated Valparaiso, 2-0, on Sunday.
"Fantastic road trip with a really professional performance today. The gusty wind made it really difficult at times for both team however I thought we sustained great pressure and converted chances when we had the opportunities. When we had to defend, we did as a team and it's a great three points," head coach Graeme Orr said.
The Salukis earned their second conference win of the season, scoring a goal in each half against Valparaiso. Defender Lucy Horn contributed to both goals.
The first goal came in the 26th minute off of a corner kick by Ashlyn Henrie. Horn provided the final touch, giving Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead. In the first half, the Salukis recorded 17 shots and three corner kicks. Southern Illinois dominated play, allowing only four shots in the half.
In the second half, Sierra O'Grady scored her first goal as a Saluki, finding the back of the net in the 52nd minute. Horn notched her first assist on the play. The Salukis recorded six shots in the second half, bringing their total to 23 for the game. Southern Illinois maintained its 2-0 lead until time expired.
Goalkeeper Fabiana Solano earned her third shutout in conference action and sixth shutout of the season, making four saves. Six Salukis, including Solano, played the full 90 minutes. Horn and Solano lead the team in minutes with 1,170 each.
The Salukis will be back in action at home on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. against Northern Iowa.
