INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-3) earned its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating IU Indy, 85-80.
Gift Uchenna scored 34 points with 17 rebounds, two blocks, and four steals in the win. Uchenna's 34 points are tied for the sixth most in a single game in program history. The junior was also an efficient 13-of-20 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the win.
Southern Illinois was consistent offensively from start-to-finish on Saturday, scoring at least 20 points in all four quarters. In the first, SIU scored 21 points with seven offensive rebounds. Uchenna paced the Salukis with 11 points and seven rebounds in the opening quarter.
At the end of one, Southern Illinois and IU Indy were tied at 21-21.
The second quarter was highlighted by a Kelowna Ngoyi buzzer beater from deep as time expired to give SIU a 43-36 halftime lead. Southern posted a field-goal percentage of 50.0% in the first half.
Uchenna's 17 points and nine rebounds led the way for Southern Illinois in the opening half, followed by senior Tyranny Brown's eight points in her hometown of Indianapolis, Ind.
The Salukis kept building momentum in the third quarter, out-scoring the Jaguars, 20-17. SIU held IU Indy to 4-of-14 shooting from the field in the frame. For Southern, 16 of its 20 points in the quarter came inside the paint.
Despite IU Indy out-scoring Southern Illinois, 27-22, in the fourth, the Salukis held on for the 85-80 win.
Along with Uchenna's big performance, Brown and Se'Quoia Allmond both scored 10 points each in the SIU victory.
Southern shot 46.38% from the field, 17.65% from deep, and a nearly perfect 18-of-19 at the free throw line on Saturday. The Salukis out-rebounded the Jaguars, 38-27, and forced 17 turnovers to secure the win.
SIU, now 1-3, will head to Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) on Monday, Nov. 25, at 6:30 p.m. to face the Redhawks in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
