CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-4) struggled on the road on Monday night at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO), falling by a final score of 70-58.
After trailing by one at the end of the first half, the Redhawks out-scored the Salukis, 39-28, to secure the home victory. Southern Illinois shot 32.79% from the field, 27.78% from deep, and 65.00% at the free throw line.
Isabella Palmqvist led the Salukis with 16 points on 6-of-11 field-goal shooting and 3-of-7 three-point shooting. Palmqvist also had three steals in the loss.
Southeast Missouri State got off to the quicker start, out-scoring SIU, 16-13, in the opening quarter. The Salukis shot just 3-of-11 from the field to start the game.
In the second quarter, Southern shot a more efficient 40.0% from the field to score 17 points as opposed to SEMO's 15, but still trailed, 31-30, at the half. Five different Salukis scored at least five points in the opening half, with Palmqvist and Alice Curman leading the way with six points each.
The hosts began to pull away in the third quarter, pacing the Salukis, 23-14, on a field-goal percentage of 55.6%. On the other side, SIU shot 30.0% and 2-of-6 from deep.
Southern Illinois continued to struggle offensively in the fourth quarter, posting 14 points on a field-goal percentage of 33.3%, to lose by a score of 70-58.
Three other players scored in double-figures for SIU besides Palmqvist, as both Tkiyah Nelson and Gift Uchenna had 11, and Curman had 10. Uchenna also had 12 rebounds and four blocks.
Southern, now 1-4, will return home on Monday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. to host Central Methodist in the 'Elementary Field Trip Day' game.
