CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (2-4) got back on track on Monday with a 74-38 win over Central Methodist.
"I was proud of our young ladies," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "I think the biggest thing when I look at the game and look at the stats is 21 assists on 29 baskets. I think that was the brightest spot from an execution standpoint."
The 21 assists were the most by the Salukis this season, and the most the team has had since Feb. 15, 2024, at Evansville, when SIU posted 21 against the Aces. Central Methodist's 31 turnovers are also the most Southern Illinois has forced in a game since the 2007-08 season when it forced 34 turnovers on Nov. 12, 2007, vs. Christian Brothers.
Gift Uchenna paced the Salukis with 23 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in Monday's win, while Tkiyah Nelson had her first career double-double, scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Southern Illinois led, 17-9, at the end of the first quarter with Uchenna's six points leading the way. SIU held Central Methodist to 4-of-14 shooting from the field in the opening 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Salukis posted a field-goal percentage of 45.0% and went 2-of-6 from deep to out-score the Eagles, 20-8. Alice Curman had five points, two assists, and one steal in the quarter.
At the end of the first half, Southern Illinois held a 37-17 advantage. SIU also forced 16 turnovers through the first two frames.
The Salukis continued to pull away in the third, out-scoring Central Methodist, 21-6. The six points were the fewest scored by the Eagles throughout the game, as SIU held the visitors to 3-of-13 shooting from the field and 0-of-4 shooting from three-point range.
Senior Tyranny Brown got hot in the quarter, scoring a team-high eight points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field.
Southern Illinois out-scored Central Methodist, 16-15, in the fourth to win by a final score of 74-38. Four Salukis scored in double-figures, with Uchenna posting 23 points, Nelson posting 11, and both Brown and Curman scoring 10 each.
SIU, now 2-4, will head to North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. in its next game this weekend.
