EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (2-6) struggled to find a rhythm offensively on Sunday at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), suffering a 71-59 loss.
Gift Uchenna scored a team-high 17 points with 17 rebounds while Kayla Cooper was the only other Saluki in double-figures with 12 points.
The Cougars were red-hot in the first quarter, out-scoring the Salukis, 23-18. SIUE shot 56.3% from the field, 57.1% from deep, and 1-of-2 at the free throw line in the opening 10 minutes. Southern Illinois hit two shots from the three-point line, with those being supplied by Cooper and Kelowna Ngoyi.
Uchenna led the Salukis with six points and four rebounds in the first.
Both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter, leading to an SIUE halftime lead of 37-32. The Salukis posted a field-goal percentage of 29.7%, a three-point percentage of 40.0%, and free throw percentage of 85.7% in the opening half.
Uchenna and Cooper combined for 17 of SIU's 32 first-half points.
In the third quarter, SIUE edged the Salukis, 19-17, to take a 56-49 lead into the final frame.
The Cougars closed the game out in the fourth, pacing the Dawgs, 15-10.
SIU finished the game with percentages of 30.8% from the field, 36.8% from deep, and 70.6% at the free throw line. The Salukis lost the turnover battle, 13-10, and reboounds, 45-40.
The Salukis, who are now 2-6, will return home for the final time in 2024 on Sunday, Dec. 22, to host UAB at 12 p.m.
