CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois dropped its Missouri Valley Conference opener to Bradley, 83-60, Tuesday night at Banterra Center. The Salukis fell to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in Valley action while the Braves earned their seventh-straight win and moved to 8-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
It was all Bradley from the start as the Braves jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and did not look back. Bradley made seven of their first nine 3-pointers and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The BU finished the half shooting 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the field and 80 percent (8-of-10) from behind the arc.
Bradley's Zek Montgomery led all scorers with 18 first-half points while Kennard Davis Jr. and Jarrett Hensley led the Salukis with seven each.
The second half was back-and-forth early before Bradley reeled off a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 21 forcing a timeout for Southern Illinois. Sophomore guard Sheridan Sharp scored all seven of his points in the second half while Davis added eight of his 15 in the final 20 minutes.
Southern struggled to control the ball with 17 turnovers in the game which Bradley was able to turn into 24 points. The Salukis scored 12 points on nine Bradley miscues.
As a team SIU finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (23-of-57) from the floor and 25 percent (4-of-16) from deep.
SIU corralled 13 offensive rebounds total leading to 20 second-chance points while winning the rebounding battle 38-29.
Hensley recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Davis scored a team-high 15 points. Antwaun Massey added nine points and eight rebounds for the Salukis.
Montgomery led all scorers in the game with 22 on 8-for-13 shooting, including 5-for-6 from behind the arc. Almar Atlason had 17 for the Braves while Preseason MVC Player of the Year Duke Deen added 10 points in 19 minutes.
